The Long Dark is an exploratory survival simulation game where solo players must fend for themselves as they explore vast, frozen, uninhabited areas. There are no zombies here - just you, the cold and everything Mother Nature has to offer.
The Long Dark is brought to you by Hinterland Studio - an independent game developer staffed by industry veterans who have been involved in the creation of many famous series, including Far Cry, Red Faction, Saints Row, God of War, Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Company of Heroes, etc. The Long Dark is the team's first attempt at creating a mind-activating, unique, independent game that pushes the boundaries of what's possible.
WINTERMUTE, part of the first story-driven season of The Long Dark, is two out of five episodes. In December 2018, in the Redux update, we radically redesigned both episodes: we changed the task system, rewrote the plot, dialogue, animation, and more.
EPISODE 1. “Don’t Go Humblely”
Long-haul pilot Will McKenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated when a mysterious flash of light causes their plane to crash in the wilds of northern Canada. Desperate to survive and find Astrid, Mackenzie comes to the town of Milton, where she begins to realize the scale of this silent catastrophe.
EPISODE 2. “Luminous Fugue”
Mackenzie's search for Astrid leads her deep into the snow-covered wilderness. Perhaps the mysterious trapper will be able to help him, but can he be trusted?
The first two episodes of WINTERMUTE take approximately 15 game hours to complete. The next three episodes are included in the price of the game and will be unlocked for free upon release.
The characters were voiced by Jennifer Hale, Mark Meare, David Hayter, and Elias Toufexis (third episode). Music composed by Chris Velasco.
